Hasbro has been quite a big hit in theaters recently with the Transformers movies, and their game spin-offs haven’t been too shabby either.
Battleship is a hybrid game of sorts. There is a naval based RTS (Real Time Strategy) Meta-Game running alongside the FPS (First Person Shooter) portion of the game. You have to balance both parts at the same time, moving and coordinating your ships while switching to your soldier to shoot some bad guys trying to defend their island. The game will most likely focus slightly more on the RTS side because that is harder to perfect in console games.
The story of the game goes something like this: The whole Rim Pack (the area where your naval units are located) has been surrounded and cut off from the rest of the fleet. It also has no radar, so there is only one thing left to do: Fight. You also will have no contact with any of the characters from the film, as this game runs alongside the film. That being said the FPS portion of the game could be pretty awkward in the fact that it might try too hard at being tactical and wind up as s standard ” run and gun ” game. Throw that in with the fact that there will be a lot of balancing between keeping your naval domination and trying to stay alive once you have landed on the island, which could ruin the fluidity of the game.
Did I mention aliens? No? My bad. Your enemy in Battleship are aliens, from the Pacific Ocean, obviously. The aliens have a few tricks up their non existent sleeves too. In the FPS section of Battleship there aren’t just normal “boring” alien soldiers, there are special classes like the “Shredder”, a giant robotic enemy capable of attacking you when you’re in cover. There are also equip-able alien weapons too. One such weapon is the KRAW, which apparently is just like a mini gun but actually gets more accurate the more you pump lead into your foes.
That’s about all the info I can dig up about this game, which has had relatively little hype, just like the film. The game hits store shelves in April 2012, so keep an eye out for a review soon after. It might turn out to be a hidden gem amongst the other terrible, terrible film spin-off’s. Maybe.
