Once again, EA is at the forefront of a new game pricing strategy. It was announced some weeks ago that EA Sport’s prize fighter, Fight Night Champion, would be coming to both Xbox Live and Playstation Network as a downloadable title after enjoying a fairly successful run on the standard retail market earlier this year. While a digital release for older games is fairly standard practice these days, what isn’t standard is HOW EA is letting people download the game.
The Full Game download is available on both platforms for $29.99. But those who are on the Playstation Network have the option right now to download only the game’s acclaimed Champion Campaign mode for only $5. On top of this, EA promises to release the game’s other modes, including Online mode, Legacy/Create a Boxer mode, and the Fight Now mode, for anywhere between $5 and $10 each in the next few weeks.
This is definitely a new and interesting strategy, to offer a game in piecemeal form to those who only want to play certain aspects of it. And it should come as no shock that EA, a company who has pioneered many DLC pricing strategies in the last 3 years, to be at the helm of this new money experiment as well.
Will this strategy work? Only time will tell, as they say. But I know I personally wouldn’t mind paying $10 to play some game’s online modes unrestricted in order to avoid paying $40+ for a package filled with other modes I have no interest in.
